We sat down with Garrett McLaughlin, Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Ends Coach at New Hampshire, to discuss special teams self-scout and how it can be used to improve scheme and technique. This episode was recorded at the New York State Football Coaches Association Clinic.Garrett McLaughlin is in his second season with UNH, coordinating the special teams and coaching the defensive ends. In 2021, both starting defensive ends coached by McLaughlin earned All-Conference honors. Curt Fitzpatrick was named SUNY Cortland’s Head Coach in February 2020. Due to COVID-19, the Red Dragons didn't compete that fall, but in his first season on the field in 2021, Coach Fitzpatrick led Cortland to one of the best seasons in school history. Cortland finished 11-1 to tie a school record for wins in a season. That mark included the Red Dragons' first 10-0 season since 1988, capped by a win over Ithaca in the annual Cortaca Jug game. Coach Fitzpatrick followed that campaign up by leading the Dragons to a 9-2 season in 2022 and a bid to the NCAA playoffs.Before Cortland, Coach Fitzpatrick was at the helm of SUNY Morrisville. Head Coach Nate Milne has led the Muhlenberg football program to unprecedented heights since taking over following the 2017 season.Coach Milne has a record of 35-5 in his three seasons, leading the Mules to the Centennial Conference championship, the NCAA quarterfinals and a final ranking in the Division III top 10 all three years. Muhlenberg advanced to the national quarterfinals for the first time ever in 2018 and the NCAA semifinals for the first time in 2019. On today's podcast, we sit down with Michael Toerper, head coach of Ithaca College. He discusses his start in coaching, influences, his pillars of coaching - attitude, prepartation, and teaching, and his passion for special teams. He also shares his keys to being able to have a successful year one as a head coach.This was recorded at the New York State High School Football Association Clinic at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York.Coach Toerper completed his first season as a head coach at Ithaca College. He was named as the 11th head coach of the Ithaca College football program on February 18, 2022.In his first season as head coach in 2022, Toerper guided the Bombers to one of their most historic seasons in program history. The Bombers finished 12-1 and reached the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals. IC secured its first undefeated regular season since 1986 and claimed its first outright Liberty League title with a 31-28 win over Union. The regular season was capped off with a 34-17 win over Cortland in the 63rd Cortaca Jug Game at Yankee Stadium, which was filled by 40,232 fans. Toerper would go on to be named AFCA Region 1 Coach of the Year, as well as D3football.com Region 2 Coach of the Year and the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Sixteen players were named All-Liberty League, including the Offensive (A.J. Wingfield), Defensive (Matt DeSimpliciis) and Special Teams (Nicholas Bahamonde) Players of the Year. Toerper, who is no stranger to the IC program, served as the defensive coordinator for the Bombers from 2017-19. He then departed to become the safeties coach at Division I Holy Cross for the past two seasons and contributed to turning that Crusaders defense into one of the top units in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in 2021. Nick Sheridan reunited with Husky head coach Kalen DeBoer on the 2022 staff as Washington's tight ends coach.  When DeBoer moved on to Alabama, Sheridan followed and became the Offensive Coordinator for the 2024 season.Sheridan, who was offensive coordinator at Indiana the previous two seasons, worked as tight ends coach under DeBoer at Indiana in 2019, when DeBoer was in charge of the Hoosiers' offense. A former walk-on quarterback, who eventually earned a scholarship, at Michigan (2006-2010), Sheridan began his college coaching career at Western Kentucky, first as a GA in 2011, then as quarterbacks coach the following year.  After stops at South Florida and Tennessee, he was hired as quarterbacks coach at Indiana in 2017, when he was named one of the top-30 coaches under the age of 30 by 247Sports.com.
