Crossing the 180 w/ Nickelodeon SVP Yolanda Cochran (Part 1: Race & Gender in Hollywood)
One of the things I try to do with this podcast is introduce you, my good listeners, to various aspects of the filmmaking world. Editors, DPs, Writers, and producers are all fair game—whether you're above or below the line. In the last episode, I interviewed the CEO and founder of the DIY distribution platform Kinema, Christie Marchese. So even film-related entrepreneurs make this show.
Today I have a very special guest for you. One of my best friends is Yolanda T. Cochran. I joke how because she's such a good friend, I tend to forget how truly impressive her CV is. She's a member of the Producers Guild of America, an Academy member, got her start working at Disney, was at Alcon Entertainment for about a dozen or so years where she helped lead the production of such films as the Traveling Pants Series, the Blind Side, and Book of Eli. After Alcon, she went to do work for Netflix, was a TV exec at ABC Freeform, and as of this episode is Senior VP of Live Television Production at Nickelodeon.
From filmmaking to television production, Yolanda has deep insights and experience across it all. We covered so much ground that this episode is part 1 of 2. In part one, Yolanda and I cover her getting in the business and the state of gender and racial representation in Hollywood, and what it's been like for her as a black woman in this industry. In the next episode of the show in two weeks, she and I will go deep into the roles of producers in film and television.
This is a great episode to share with anyone who is interested in learning about this business overall. It's kind of like a mini business/film school class.

Crossing the 180 w/ Christie Marchese, CEO/Founder of Kinema
Today on the show I speak with the founder and CEO of Kinema, a company whose mission is to make it fun, easy, and financially rewarding for anyone who wants to screen a movie—from individuals to organizations.
One of the things I try to do with this podcast is to explore ALL aspects of filmmaking and the industry that are intriguing, provocative, and interesting. I wanted to create a show that feels like the kind of geeky, cinema-loving conversations that you'd have with your filmmaking friends in the corner of a party, or at happy hour after a long day at work. And boy, today's conversation with Christie is that to a tee. We cover a wide range of topics like the role of Disney princesses in cinema, how do we deal with movies made by cinematic heroes who've fallen, and how race, gender, and sexuality have been portrayed in movies and television. I have no doubt you'll enjoy listening to this discussion as much I did having it.

Crossing the 180 w/ "Passing" DP Eduard Grau
This week on the show Ron interviews Edu Grau, the director of photography for Rebecca Hall's black and white film "Passing." This is a film where the themes of the story about a light-skinned black woman, played by Ruth Negga, parallel the medium on which the story is told. Ruth's character is played opposite Tessa Thompson, herself a woman who could pass, but chooses not to (at least not permanently).
Edu is a cinematographer with an impressive background, being one of the youngest people to be inducted into the ASC. At the young age of 27, he was given the opportunity to shoot fashion designer Tom Ford's feature directorial debut "A Single Man." Edu shares the incredible story of how that happened, how his career skyrocketed from there as he went on to DP for such films as "Buried," "Boy Erased," and "Suffragette," and became a sought-after commercial DP. If you want insights into directing an artistic black and white film shot in 4:3 aspect ratio at a time when the more "K's" you have in your camera the better, this is the interview for you.
"This is not a job. This is a lifestyle." ~ Edu Grau on being a filmmaker
