This week’s guest is Jojo Mayer. I am in the midst of a project that has me going through a bunch of our past episodes (I will be announcing this project shortly and I’m super excited about it), but when I went back through the Jojo’s episode, I was reminded of its importance. Jojo is mind-blowing player who helped pioneer the drum n bass movement in New York City by “reverse engineering” programmed drum loops and applying them to the drum set. He is also revered for his exceptional technique, which he dissects in the wildly-popular instructional series titled “Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer Parts 1 & 2”. He is the leader of his own band, Nerve, which he founded back in 1997. We don’t necessarily stick to the normal format in this one; Jojo is a great storyteller. We start off with a few anecdotes about a cymbal once-owned by Billy Higgins that Jojo picked up by happenstance and Jojo’s time spent “studying” with Freddy Gruber, but we certainly touch on a lot of Jojo’s opinions / perspectives regarding accepting influences, but knowing when they’re actually a detriment to your personal growth on the instrument. He’s a very philosophical man and shares quite a few nuggets of slap-you-in-the-face style wisdom. Even though this is probably one of our most-downloaded episodes over the life of the show, we’ve been getting a lot of new listeners and I wanted to push this towards the top because, well…it’s important. This week’s guest is Kris Myers - a Nashville-based drummer whose main project is the progressive-rock band Umphrey’s McGee, but he’s also played with a variety of jazz artists including Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Dennis DiBlasio and many more. With Umphrey’s, Kris has shared the stage with Les Claypool, Huey Lewis, Stephen Perkins, Victor Wooten, Bill Evans, Jason Bonham and many more…as always. He truly is an INSANE drummer and I will say he’s probably the best guest at breaking down his choices. This week’s guest is Ian Froman - an incredible jazz drummer based in New York City. Ian has taught at Berklee College of Music, Drummers Collective, New School University, City College of New York in addition to private lessons. He has toured the world with so many of the greatest players in the genre including (but CERTAINLY not limited to) John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Michael Brecker, Gary Burton, and Matthew Garrison. This is easily one of my favorite conversations I’ve ever had…and not just on the podcast. Ian is such a fun story teller and he’s got A LOT of stories. This week’s guest is Jordan Rose - a Brooklyn-based session drummer who’s worked with Theo Katzman, Cory Wong, SZA, Caleb Hawley, Charlie Puth, Pomplamoose, Charlie Hunter and so many other legends. I know I’m a broken record, but I LOVE his feel on the kit and I couldn’t wait to get him on the show. He’s overcome a lot in his life, including a period of 2 years where he lost hearing in his right ear, but it only made him into a better musician. We also talk about music helped him overcoming his social anxiety (something that I personally struggle with to this day). All in all, Jordan is a gem. He’s played with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Mark Turner and so many others…he has a Masters in music from UCLA via the very prestigious Thelonius Munk Institute of Jazz Performance.
