Faith and finances have a troubled relationship in our society. Faith can be used as a platform for personal gain. So, some conclude that money and Christianity should be kept as far apart as possible - but it is not possible. Money is a reality of life. It is human to attempt a reshaping of God in our own fashion. So the God we begin to worship is false, a deity of our own making. The Bible calls this idolatry. Partial information can be as detrimental as no information at all. Reading only some of the prescription instructions doesn't lead to health. There is so much to learn in life, no one can claim to master it all! Still, ignorance is not our problem. We can always learn. But a false sense of mastery will always get us into trouble. The one who thinks they know it all cannot learn. In today's sermon, Dr. John points us to Apollos as a brilliant man who was willing to be instructed. We get into our car, decide where to go and set the GPS. We trust its directional commands to get us to our destination. Port cities has a reputation. They are exposed to the varieties of trade, new ideas and surging population. Corinth was a boom town that exhibited the traits of immorality. We are made for worship. The image of God stamped upon everyone who breathes plants a hunger for God. Clearly that hunger is misshaped by sin - but it is a hunger nonetheless. In our day, Google has become the authoritative text to resolve arguments or debates. If you want to know who won the World Series in 1958 - look it up. Of course, Google is not inerrant and far too flimsy to assure us of vital matters. When Paul preached, he pointed to the Scriptures as the authoritative and reliable source of truth. Dr. John speaks today of the Bereans, who when they heard Paul, they then went to the Scriptures to verify the truth. God has not left us to guess, take a poll, or rely on the voice of another.
