Roger Penrose: Why The Big Bang Was Not The Beginning
In this engaging discussion, Nobel laureate Roger Penrose, a pioneer in mathematical physics and cosmology, challenges traditional views on the Big Bang, suggesting it wasn't the beginning at all. He explores conformal cyclic cosmology and the implications of gravitational wave function collapse for consciousness. Penrose critiques modern AI, arguing it lacks true understanding. He delves into Gödel's incompleteness and how it relates to human cognition, leaving listeners with profound questions about the nature of reality and consciousness.

Is Mathematics Invented or Discovered?
Join Roger Penrose, a Nobel laureate, as he explores mathematics' profound connection to reality, arguing it's discovered rather than invented. Stephen Wolfram offers a captivating perspective that sees mathematics as a historical artifact shaped by culture. Meanwhile, Max Tegmark posits that our universe is a particular mathematical structure, while George Lakoff delves into the cognitive roots of mathematical concepts, suggesting they arise from human understanding rather than existing in nature itself. An engaging journey through the philosophy of mathematics!

244. Asking A Theoretical Physicist About The Physics Of Consciousness | Roger Penrose
In this engaging conversation, Roger Penrose, a British mathematical physicist and Nobel Laureate, discusses the intriguing nature of consciousness and its computational limits. He explores Gödel's theorem and its implications for understanding consciousness beyond mere algorithms. The dialogue touches on the interplay between mathematics and art, illustrated through M.C. Escher's works. Penrose also examines how intuition and pattern recognition influence human creativity and the complex relationship between consciousness, quantum mechanics, and the universe's origins.

28 | Roger Penrose on Spacetime, Consciousness, and the Universe
Sir Roger Penrose has had a remarkable life. He has contributed an enormous amount to our understanding of general relativity, perhaps more than anyone since Einstein himself -- Penrose diagrams, singularity theorems, the Penrose process, cosmic censorship, and the list goes on. He has made important contributions to mathematics, including such fun ideas as the Penrose triangle and aperiodic tilings. He has also made bold conjectures in the notoriously contentious areas of quantum mechanics and the study of consciousness. In his spare time he's managed to become an extremely successful author, writing such books as The Emperor's New Mind and The Road to Reality. With far too much that we could have talked about, we decided to concentrate in this discussion on spacetime, black holes, and cosmology, but we made sure to reserve some time to dig into quantum mechanics and the brain by the end.

Roger Penrose on Cosmology, Quantum Mechanics, and Deep Reality
Roger Penrose, a Nobel laureate and mathematical physicist, dives into the mysteries of the universe. He introduces his revolutionary idea of conformal cyclic cosmology, challenging inflationary theories. Penrose explores the nature of consciousness, arguing it transcends mere computation and discussing its deep evolutionary roots. He also unravels quantum mechanics, linking conscious decisions to quantum states. From black hole physics to Gödel’s insights, Penrose's thoughts push the boundaries of understanding reality and consciousness.
