2 | Carlo Rovelli on Quantum Mechanics, Spacetime, and Reality
Quantum mechanics and general relativity are the two great triumphs of twentieth-century theoretical physics. Unfortunately, they don't play well together -- despite years of effort, we currently lack a completely successful quantum theory of gravity, although there are some promising ideas out there. Carlo Rovelli is a pioneer of one of those ideas, loop quantum gravity, as well as the bestselling author of such books as Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and the recent The Order of Time. We talk about how to make progress on this knotty problem, including whether string theory will play a role (Carlo thinks not). [smart_track_player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/seancarroll/rovelli.mp3" social_email="true" hashtag="mindscapepodcast" ] Carlo Rovelli is a professor of theoretical physics at the Centre de Physique Théorique de Luminy of Aix-Marseille University in France. In 1988, he and Abhay Ashtekar and Lee Smolin introduced the idea of loop quantum gravity. He is also the author of the "relational" interpretation of quantum mechanics. Carlo Rovelli on Consciousness, the Illusion of Time, Loop Quantum Gravity, & Philosophy of Relational Quantum Mechanics
Carlo Rovelli, a leading theoretical physicist renowned for his work on loop quantum gravity, dives deep into the mysteries of consciousness, time, and quantum mechanics. He discusses the relational interpretation of quantum mechanics, suggesting that relationships, not objects, are fundamental to understanding reality. Rovelli explores how time can be seen as probabilistic rather than linear, intertwining scientific principles with philosophical inquiries. He also reflects on the ethical dimensions of consciousness and the captivating realm of psychedelic experiences.

The quantum revolution: The way the world is
In the final episode of this series, we hear how radical quantum ideas are reshaping our fundamental understanding of the universe. Nobel Prize winner Anton Zeilinger tells the FT’s Madhumita Murgia about the future of teleportation and the quantum internet; quantum computing pioneer David Deutsch makes the case for the theory that we live in a multiverse; and FT innovation editor John Thornhill speaks to physicist Carlo Rovelli about relational quantum mechanics.Presented by Madhumita Murgia and John Thornhill, produced by Josh Gabert-Doyon and Edwin Lane. Executive producer is Manuela Saragosa. Sound design by Breen Turner and Samantha Giovinco. Original music by Metaphor Music. The relationship between mind and matter | Slavoj Žižek, Alenka Zupančič and Carlo Rovelli
Carlo Rovelli, theoretical physicist who frames observation as relational information. Alenka Zupančič, Lacanian philosopher who stresses subjectivity emerging from gaps and negativity. Slavoj Žižek, provocative philosopher mixing sharp argument and humor. They debate how mind and matter relate, the role of perspectives in physics, language’s limits, and whether subjectivity can arise within a physical world.

Carlo Rovelli: The Genius Exposing Quantum Gravity
In this intriguing discussion, Carlo Rovelli, a renowned theoretical physicist and author, dives into the complexities of loop quantum gravity and its implications for our understanding of the universe. He explores how matter behaves near black holes, the granular structure of space affecting light speed, and the superposition nature of space at quantum scales. Rovelli also tackles the consciousness-quantum mechanics connection and the ongoing dialogues surrounding the information paradox of black holes. His insights challenge conventional physics, fostering a deeper exploration of reality.

Carlo Rovelli — All Reality Is Interaction
Physicist Carlo Rovelli says humans don’t understand the world as made by things, “we understand the world made by kisses, or things like kisses — happenings.” This everyday truth is as scientific as it is philosophical and political, and it unfolds with unexpected nuance in his science. Rovelli is one of the founders of loop quantum gravity theory and author of the tiny, bestselling book Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and The Order of Time. Seeing the world through his eyes, we understand that there is no such thing as “here” or “now.” Instead, he says, our senses convey a picture of reality that narrows our understanding of its fullness.Carlo Rovelli is a professor of physics at Aix-Marseille University, where he is director of the quantum gravity group in the Center for Theoretical Physics. He is also director of the Samy Maroun Research Center for Time, Space, and the Quantum. His books include Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and, most recently, The Order of Time.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.This show originally aired in March 2017. Carlo Rovelli: Cosmic Mysteries and the Politics of Wonder
Carlo Rovelli, a theoretical physicist and bestselling author known for work on quantum gravity, reflects on LSD-altered perception, the “spectacular” beauty of general relativity and quantum mechanics, and his search for meaning. He traces political awakenings, pacifism, and why scientists should engage in public life. He also shares a provocative idea about the absence of ultimate reality.

Carlo Rovelli: From Dante to White Holes
Physicist Carlo Rovelli discusses loop quantum gravity and the paradoxes of black holes. He proposes the idea that black holes could turn into white holes near their singularities. The conversation also explores the guest's upbringing, their transition from politics to physics, and the challenges of quantum gravity. They reflect on the importance of analogies in science and touch on the mistakes made by the West and limitations of freedom of speech.
