She has maintained from day one that she acted in self-defense — that Obumseli grabbed her by the throat, that she threw a knife from ten feet away to create distance, and that she never meant to kill him.

The medical examiner says the wound — three inches deep, severing the subclavian artery — is inconsistent with a thrown knife. The defense says a battered woman in terror doesn't move the way she remembers moving.
