How would you feel about a medical examination that was designed to make you faint? What about having to instal soundproof doors and blinds, because noise and light can bring on seizures?
Welcome to the world of the Long Covid patient – and there are millions of them. Six years since the first Covid lockdown, humans have become relatively blasé about the disease. But it has cast a crippling shadow over a great many lives.
Long Covid doesn't just leave its victims physically exhausted: the impacts are mental, emotional, economic, social and brutal.
Worse still, Long Covid is not well understood and, as a result, treatments are sadly lacking. And it can come with a stigma – like other debilitating illnesses, patients often don't get taken seriously.
Kenny Campbell is joined by Claire Higham, who has Long Covid and campaigns for a better understanding of this cruel condition, to find out more about how it wrecks lives, what's being done to combat it and why it isn't making bigger headlines. It's both fascinating and disturbing but, for patients and their loved ones, it can be an appalling brake on their lives – one that many never recover from.
Also, a small correction to a figure raised in the show – Germany is dedicating €50m per year for ten years (half a billion over a decade) towards research into MECFS and other infection-associated chronic conditions.
