Episode notes
Operators Exist At Multiple Levels
- Operators exist at every level from executive assistants to COOs and their responsibilities scale with organizational scope.
- Confusing levels (e.g., calling a bookkeeper a CFO) creates mismatch; hire the right tiered role for bookkeeping, controlling, or CFO work.
Hire Operators To Execute Outcomes Not Invent Vision
- Define the operator role by outcomes: build process, hire and assemble resources, then hold teams accountable to objectives.
- Don’t let the operator invent the vision; their job is to turn the CEO/board vision into repeatable systems.
Put An Operating System In Place First
- Build at least a kernel of an operating system before hiring an operator so incoming hires optimize, not dismantle, your business.
- The OS includes core processes, meeting rhythms, checklists, basic metrics and cultural values.
