Bempedoic Acid: Statin Alternative
- Bempedoic acid inhibits cholesterol synthesis only in the liver, avoiding muscle side effects seen with statins.
- It reduces ApoB by ~18% as monotherapy and is effective in statin-intolerant patients with minimal side effects.
Ezetimibe Blocks Cholesterol Absorption
- Ezetimibe blocks cholesterol absorption at intestinal and hepatobiliary interfaces, reducing cholesterol recycling.
- This depletion induces LDL receptors to clear more ApoB particles, lowering blood cholesterol effectively.
Be Cautious With Phytosterol Supplements
- Avoid phytosterol supplements unless blood phytosterol levels are tested.
- Normal dietary phytosterols in whole foods are safe; excessive supplementation can be harmful and should be monitored.
