The Candy Valentino Show Holocaust Survivor And Animal Rights Pioneer Dr. Alex Hershaft On Choosing Compassion & Hope
When I was first introduced to Dr. Alex Hershaft, I was immediately inspired by his tenacity and passion. Not only is he an animal rights pioneer and founder of Farm Animals Rights Movement (FARM), but he’s also a Holocaust survivor.
In our conversation, he details his tumultuous journey from a Warsaw ghetto to eventually immigrating to the US alone at the age of 16. He shares how his early life has given him a unique perspective on freedom and autonomy, which has rippled into his work as an animal rights activist. We discuss the reality of factory farming, getting traction for a movement, and Alex’s refreshing attitude on overcoming adversity.
IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT:
- Choosing to be a survivor, not a victim
- Alex’s journey to becoming a vegetarian (and now vegan)
- The pivotal moment when Alex noticed parallels between the Holocaust and the abuse of farm animals
- How Alex and the team at FARM brought the concept of animal rights into the public consciousness
- The importance of living in integrity and alignment with your values, even if it goes against the status quo
