Authenticity Has Survived, the Self Has Not

The modern world is obsessed with a single, overriding command: be authentic. But what if this relentless pursuit of the “true self” is a trap, a moral dead end that leaves us more hollow than whole? This was the chilling verdict of literary critic Lionel Trilling, who argued that our culture’s fixation on authenticity has come at the expense of a deeper, more vital virtue: sincerity.
