The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast Jacob: Wrestling with God
04:29:26
Inner Duality Mirrors Mythic Rivalry
- Human psyche contains opposing drives: one striving for good, another cynical and self-destructive.
- Mythic hostile-brother motifs (Cain/Abel, Jacob/Esau) symbolize that internal moral conflict.
Center As Moral Compass
- A sacred center unites a group by aligning aims and emotions around a highest ideal.
- Marking that center (pillar/obelisk) stabilizes community identity across time and change.
Voluntary Suffering Builds Courage
- Accept voluntary suffering to build courage rather than eliminate fear.
- Confront fears in manageable steps to increase strength and competence.

Lecture 13 in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories lecture series. In this lecture, I present the second half of the story of Jacob, later Israel (he who struggles with God). After serving his time with his uncle Laban, and being deceived by him in the most karmic of manners, Jacob returns to his home country. On the way, he encounters an angel, or God Himself, wrestles through the night with Him.
