Episode notes
Start With A Workable Cognition
- Use a negative cognition that fits criteria but expect it to morph; start with a workable one rather than delaying treatment.
- If the cognition doesn't fit the criteria, the brain will stall and processing gets stuck.
Follow Client Readiness
- Respect client readiness and titrate targets; don't push deeper themes (e.g., shame) if the client only signals safety concerns.
- Let deeper cognitions emerge naturally during reprocessing instead of forcing them.
Three Cognition Categories
- Negative cognitions cluster into responsibility, safety/vulnerability, and control/choice categories.
- Matching a positive cognition from the same category increases coherence between negative and positive pairs.
