Journal of International Solidarity Origins of Canadian Settler Colonialism and Whiteness (w/ Dr. Phil Henderson)
In this first episode of the International Solidarity Pod, Dr. Phil Henderson discusses the how the confederation of Canada in 1867 marked a new trajectory for the dispossession of Indigenous peoples on the continent, and that the creation of 'whiteness' was an important development at this time.
A central takeaway from this conversation is that 'Canada', like any colonial or class project, contains many contradictory elements that continue to require active work to hold together.
This conversation is based on a paper written by Dr. Henderson titled "Federalism and Settler Imperialism: Racial Regimes, Whiteness, and Conquest in Canadian Constitutionalism", which can be found here: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journa...
