Mind-Body Solution Karl Friston: Is The Brain A Statistical Organ? The Free Energy Principle & Active Inference
02:02:03
Precision Estimation Is Mental Action
- Estimating precision (uncertainty) is a form of mental action akin to attention; deploying precision privileges certain representations for belief updating.
- Deep hierarchical models that predict 'my' future enable agency and planning.
Markov Blankets Define The Boundary Of Existence
- Markov blankets formally individuate a system by partitioning internal, sensory and active states to preserve conditional independence.
- Active and sensory states close the action–perception loop, enabling synchronization between inside and outside dynamics.
Design Networks Around Nested Markov Blankets
- When designing neural or computational architectures keep computations local by exploiting Markov blanket sparsity.
- Use nested Markov blankets to create efficient hierarchical message passing and scale‑appropriate time constants.

Professor Karl Friston is one of the greatest neuroscientists in history. He is Professor of Neuroscience at King's College London and holds Honorary Doctorates from the University of Zurich, University of York and Radboud University. He is the world expert on brain imaging, neuroscience, and theoretical neurobiology, and pioneers the Free-Energy Principle for action and perception, with well-over 300,000 citations. Friston received the first Young Investigators Award in Human Brain Mapping (1996) and was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (1999). In 2000 he was President of the international Organization of Human Brain Mapping. In 2003 he was awarded the Minerva Golden Brain Award and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2006. He became of Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in 2012, received the Weldon Memorial prize and Medal in 2013 for contributions to mathematical biology and was elected as a member of EMBO (excellence in the life sciences) in 2014 and the Academia Europaea in (2015). He was the 2016 recipient of the Charles Branch Award for unparalleled breakthroughs in Brain Research and the Glass Brain Award - a lifetime achievement award in the field of human brain mapping.
