Like Congress, the Austin City Council gets to decide if it NEEDS to give itself a raise, so the 10 members are deciding whether to increase their own pay by 40 percent. One of the reasons given is the skyrocketing cost of living in Austin. Jeff Ward points out the laughable hypocrisy to this entire self-serving exercise, and he asks, "If the pay is so awful for elected officials, how come they never seem to quit?" He proposes a study: Cut the pay of all elected officials by 50 percent and see how many quit.
