Leadership in public safety isn’t about rank, authority, or titles. At its core, it’s about people. In this episode of the Leadership Crucible Podcast, Chief Randy Brugman sits down with John Marshall, former Director of the United States Marshals Service, to explore what real leadership looks like inside one of the nation’s most demanding professions.
Marshall’s career spans more than four decades in law enforcement—from his early days as a Virginia State Trooper to serving as U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Virginia, Director of the U.S. Marshals Service, and Secretary of Public Safety for the Commonwealth of Virginia, overseeing more than 20,000 public safety professionals. Along the way, he learned that the strongest leaders aren’t defined by power—they’re defined by loyalty, trust, and how they take care of the people they serve alongside.
In this conversation, Marshall shares lessons from the front lines of policing, the challenge of leading former peers, navigating leadership at the highest levels of government, and why believing in people may be the greatest gift a leader can give. He also reflects on the evolving relationship between law enforcement and the communities they serve, and what it takes to stay mission-focused in a profession that often faces intense scrutiny.
From leadership accountability and organizational culture to the personal weight of public service, this episode offers a thoughtful and honest look at what it means to lead when the stakes are high and the mission matters. If you’re responsible for leading people, building trust in difficult environments, or learning how to balance authority with humility, this conversation offers powerful insights from a lifetime of service.
