Disappointment is dangerous when it turns into cynicism. That’s the backdrop of Malachi—Israel’s temple is rebuilt, the Torah is read, the priests are serving, and yet the people are hollow. • This book falls between the rebuilding of Jerusalem and Nehemiah’s reforms
• Malachi uses a dispute structure: God makes a claim, the people argue, and God responds
• Israel had returned physically from exile—but not fully spiritually
