First published in 1666 during John Bunyan’s imprisonment, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners is his spiritual autobiography—a record of the Lord’s dealings with his soul in conviction, temptation, conversion, and assurance.

Written out of a father’s deep love for his own children, this book is Bunyan’s honest account of God’s work in his heart. Separated from his family by hardship, he records his journey through deep conviction of sin, fearful doubts, fierce temptations, and, at last, the comfort and assurance found in Christ.

Bunyan speaks plainly of sinking into despair and being raised again by mercy, showing that God wounds and heals, humbles and restores. What once seemed overwhelming became a testimony to grace greater than his sin and stronger than Satan’s assaults.

More than a personal story, this book calls his children—and all who read—to remember the beginnings of God’s grace in their own lives and to press on through the wilderness until they reach the promised rest beyond.
