Über Israel und Palästina sprechen Law, Violence, and Accountability — Dr. Revital Madar on State Power and Trials
In this episode, I speak with Dr. Revital Madar, political theorist and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the European University Institute. Her research examines how state violence is legalized, normalized, and contested, with a focus on Israel and Palestine.
We discuss her project State Agents on Trial, analyzing trials of security forces as sites where the boundaries of legitimate violence are negotiated. Revital explains how legal frameworks and media narratives shape which forms of violence are sanctioned, ignored, or reframed, and reflects on the limits of law, the role of academia, and the ethical responsibility to critically engage with state power.
