He began as a patrol officer in 1975 and rose through the ranks over decades, retiring as chief in 2018. Along the way he led counter-terrorism efforts post-9/11, commanded large divisions, and became known for strategic leadership and community focus. In this conversation, we’ll explore his journey from street officer to chief, lessons from decades of leadership, how policing has changed over time, and the enduring challenges and opportunities facing today’s law enforcement professionals.
