Is There Something Missing?

Before machine computation came along, people thought of consciousness as there's just stuff in your head. Thats like william jamess, a stream of consciousness. And at some point people realize we can actually build that kind of stuff in computerized brains and machines but they don't seem to be conscious. So is there something missing? Something extra we don't understand? I think we're beginning to realize weight, yes, there's something that was missing, but the thing that was missing is itself fairly rationally understandable, and ultimately probably buildable in some not too distant future.
