The Limits of Academic Nursing

Nursing education and practice were for the first time in nursing's history separated. Some educators believed a strict separation between education and practice was essential to establishing nursing as an academic discipline. Nursing faculty, unlike their colleagues in medicine, could not be reimbursed for nursing care services. In 1960s, some nurse leaders saw the cost of this approach and worked to really reunify nurse education and service.
