The party lost one of its most progressive leaders that August when radical firebrand Thaddeus Stevens succumbed to his ailments and died. Soon white Supremacist vigilantes would launch a full-blown reign of terror across the southern countryside Threatening to undo the hard-won gains of black men and women.
