How to Buy a Dog in the 19th Century
In the 1830s and 1840s there was an explosion in what's called dog napping. As dogs become more popular, their financial value rises as their emotional value rises. So we get all these dog napping incidents where dogs are held for ransom. And you either pay the ransom to get your dog back, or the dog then goes on the market again to be resold. But buying dogs in the 19th century is actually quite fraught. You need to be certain of the provenance of your dog. Where did it come from?"
