Even nobility marriage was used as a method of forming political alliances. Over time, due to the relatively limited number of potential consorts, the gene pool of many ruling families grew progressively smaller and smaller until all European royalty was related with many being descended from a certain person through many lines of dissent. The House of Habsburg was also infamous for its intermarriages. And the Habsburg lip is often cited as a hereditary ill effect. We will get into that.
