Du Bois's Faith in Supporting the War
When the United States enters the war, Du Bois makes the very difficult decision to support the U.S. He believes that the war is going to be an opportunity for African Americans to demonstrate their citizenship and achieve greater democratic rights. His faith in his commitment to supporting the war is very quickly tested during the early years of the conflict. In July of 1917, there's a horrific race riot, racial massacre in East St. Louis. Shortly after that, black soldiers in Houston, Texas engage in a bloody Yutani. So while Du Bois is still committed to supporting the country, he also has to contend with the ongoing realities of violent white supremacy.
