The Origins of Religion
Lewis thinks that religion begins originally, not with some sort of cosmological inference, but with awe. If you believed in something like the Greek pantheon, the universe for you is ultimate. The gods are part of it. They're just bigger and stronger than you and they're not entirely in your favor. And ancient man found many things awesome and thus the idea of religious veneration developed.
