The Underground Railroad Network?

Do we have any sense of how that network would connect with the very first part of the journey? If you escaped from, for example, a plantation, how would you find your way to the underground railroad? Would it be that you'd have to already know somebody who would approach you? Or to be honest, i've not come across a huge amount of am a, your first hand testimony's off this.
