I think it was just a revenge move from the riler's point of view. I thought at first, like on my first feeling, i thought the reveal was going to be that the ridler was the son of the journalist who got killed. That might be a hint there towards a different character that's going to be introduced later on. But yet, i wish they had, as you said, done it either more delicately or more consciously, or just did away with it altogether. There is no real character arket felt for bruce waine. Like, we cut one for the bad man, but as for bruke wain, there's no real resolution towards the end
