Is It a Good Idea to Cut Universal Credit for Unemployed People?
Benefits for those out of work are the same as they were in 19 70. But benefits for people in work have grown substantially over that period. The furlough scheme was just very, very generous to people who ere kept on by their employer, but not not working. We don't even try to replace people's incomes when they become unemployed - unlike a lot of continental european countries. That makes the furloug scheme all the more extraordinary.
