The History of Abortion in Australia

The first law in abortion in England and Wales was Lord Ellenbrough's Act of 1803. Legislation removed the death penalty, but abortion at any stage carried a long prison sentence. In 1861 offences against the person act specifically criminalised the use of drugs or poisons to abort a fetus. Of course, if something went wrong and the woman died, an abortionist could be facing a murder charge.
