The way that the Great War unfolded was deeply impacted by the Franco-Prussian war. The treatment of civilians in Belgium when Germany marched into Belgium in 1914 was directly related to the fears of French snipers in 1870. Overall, a lot of people expected the next big war to be between France and Britain. And it's not so much that sense of revenge as the sense of inevitability around war.
