Paying Off Vikings

Vikings may have attacked a specific settlement, and then used the spoils to trade with another point further down the river or somewhere else in the region. The payment of tributes seems to have started very early on - some of the earliest viking campaigns seem to have involved these kinds of pay offs. But it's not until later decades that we really start to see huge sum sums presented by frankish rulers to vikings for their services.
