The Narrative of Prostitution in the 19th Century
In the 19th century, there were two dominant narratives about prostitution. Prostitution represented a potential danger of women being in control of their bodies. On the other hand, prostitutes were viewed as victims who had been seduced by men. Historians have done a very good job of breaking through these narratives to get a better understanding - especially of who undertook sex work and why.
