Adam Patterson and W.E.B. Du Bois

Adam Patterson is really a fascinating figure. He was someone who believed that it was possible to succeed regardless of race in America at a time when African-Americans were being relegated to second-class citizens and essentially removed from the political establishment. They reunite, interestingly enough, during the war when Adam Patterson receives a commission to become an officer in the United States Army. And they form a very close relationship, but a relationship that eventually becomes increasingly complicated over the post-war years.
