The Risk of Sepsis in Surgery

Inventor Joseph Lister used carbolic acid to clean wounds and keep our infection. He developed a ritual for antiseptus in which clotted blood would be removed, bathed in carbolic then covered with tin foil packed with wool as well. In 1867 he was able to report that none of the patients he worked on died of sepsis. The Butchery Guard is by Lindsay Fitzharis who has written an extraordinary book on Joseph Lister called the Butchery Guard. And I think another question I've got to ask you is when did anaesthetic come about? Could you give us some examples of early types of anaesthetic?
