What Was the Nature of Slavery in Early Mediaeval England?
Early mediaeval slavery operates in a very different way to roman slavery. In the early middle ages, every one thought of themselves in terms of service to some one. But it was a question of what you did and on what terms it mattered. There were plenty of outright slaves who had no say over their own time or their own person's relationships with other people. It was something that people saw as quite a sort of bargaining chip.
