Is There a Role for Refaxment in Primary Prophylaxis?
AASLD's recommendation to add refaxment to lactulose after the second episode of hepatic encephalopathy. Hypokalemia usually presents before treatment, often malnourished and also often develops during the treatment. Metroninazol and neomycin do have the side effect of ototoxicity and neurotoxicity with long-term use. But they can still be used if refaxment is not available.
