The Maxims of Conversational Communication
Linguistics professor Valerie Friedland says we can flout the rules of polite conversation. Greis: To make our conversations effective, you need to say something that relates to what I said. By flouting the maximum, we're able to let people come to their own conclusions and save face. The next maximum is the maximum of quality, which basically says we shouldn't say something false.
