Mary, queen of scotts mother had been acting as regent on her behalf in scotland. She tried very hard to forge a personal connection with elizabeth. They exchanged expensive gifts and they started to discuss a meeting between the two women. In 15 62, they were supposed to meet in the summer in nottingham but it was cancelled at the last minute. At that point, mary seems to have decided to turn her attention to marrying again as a way of strengthening her claim to the english throne.
