What Should the United States Have Done in the Nineties?
In 19 90, they had one 70 fifth the per capita g n p of the united states. We gave them most favored nations status in increasingly elaborate ways. They especially needed western technology and we went to great lengths to facilitate their integration into the world trading system. And again, this was all done on purpose. We were trying to make china more powerful. Now i think there were limits to what we could do. You could have slowed down chinese growth in the early 19 nineties, maybe even in the early two thousands, but at this point it's just too late. I don't think trump had great success simply because it was too late.
