The rule of saint benedict is neither the only nor indeed the first rule set down in writing about the principles of monastic life, but is one of many and preceded by by several. So we shouldn't think of it as too rigorous in its application or adoption across the mediaeval world. It's t it's the longevity and and actually the the widespread nature of religious communities following the principles that make it so interesting to study.
