You Can't Put the Genie Back in the Bottle
Lincoln ordered the Jews out of Paducah, Kentucky. He then instructed the general in chief of the army to revoke General Order's number 11. Grant was told by a staff officer that the problem with number 11 was the broad language. Had the word peddler been suited after Jew, I do not suppose any exception would have been taken to the order. The president deemed it necessary to revoke it.
