Is the Ark of the Covenant Still Out There?

The apostates in Jerusalem when Jerusalem goes south, you know cultic figurines and and some would say even phallic symbols into the holy of holies where the ark would have been. This is why you get a whole bunch of legends about the ark being absent Prior to Nebuchadnezzar's destruction of the temple which lends again Fuel to this idea that the Ark of the Covenant is still out there waiting to be brought back.
