A cornered kerchief was a flat, not quite square piece of linen. It could be worn as a headscarf or twisted to put tails on the top of your head. When it became more structured, wire was used to help give it a corner at the cheekbones. A French hood is a development of that with billaments fabric and jewels like pearls.
