In 1917 the French visual artist Marcel Duchamp bought a porcelain urinal, turned it 90 degrees and signed it Arm-Mutt. The work exists in multiple replicas today and its immateriality is part of what makes it what it is. Its appearance is seen as that moment of upheaval when art finally went full critical becoming a fundamentally political and discursive enterprise.
