In this febrile atmosphere, with very few sources of information available, it was easy for wild and terrifying stories to take hold. Contemplation of death was made all the more immediate by the fact that the dead were literally piling up at the time. As well as worrying about preserving people's souls after death, another issue the church had to deal with was what to do with their bodies. It became clear quite quearly that the churchyards were often reflecting, though small, so reflecting the size of a parish.
