The waste products that build up as the reaction goes on prevent the reaction from happening very efficiently. So if we could find a way of getting more bang for the buck by burning off the waste products with extra neutrons, then we'd save a whole lot of money and save a wole lot of waste as well. And in this way, you can keep the fusion reactor running a lot longer and enable it to burn off the actonites.
